Challenge

Alert Volumes Bottlenecked Morse’s Compliance Operations

When Olga Regal joined Morse as its Chief Compliance Officer, she had one main goal: to build a compliance program that maintains consistent, defensible standards across the organization. Streamlining the KYC and AML review processes was foundational to that goal.

To comply with global AML and sanctions requirements, the Morse FinCrime team puts every new applicant through an automated screening system that checks sanctions lists, PEP databases, and adverse media. If any applicant details match a flagged entity, the system triggers an alert for human review before approval.

As Morse’s customer base expanded, these alerts reached hundreds, sometimes thousands, every month. For each one, the team needed to manually review the potential match, check sources for disconfirming evidence, and document their decision before resolving.

This workflow impacted two sides of the company.

Upholding Compliance

Toggling between systems, cross-referencing names, and verifying granular details like birth dates and country of residence is repetitive by nature. As alert volume increased, so did the cognitive load of this process, increasing the risk of missing subtle discrepancies and incomplete documentation. Olga knew that if left unchecked, that dynamic would undermine the consistency and auditability of compliance decisioning over time.

Supporting Business Scale

The volume of screening alerts limited the FinCrime team’s capacity to scale. Investigating each alert by hand diverted valuable time and focus away from advancing program enhancements and expanding compliance coverage into new markets. More often than not, these alerts did not indicate genuine risk.

As Gwera Kiwana, Head of Global Expansion and Partnerships, explains, “We serve individual customers globally, so common names generate a large portion of these alerts. Someone named James Smith or Juan Hernández might apply for an account, and their names would match dozens of entries across global watchlists.”

Knowing manual review couldn’t scale at Morse’s ambitious pace, the FinCrime team implemented an AI agent in their screening system to help with alert review. This integration, however, required constant API updates and reruns to function, so the relationship eventually ended.

To build a more robust foundation, Morse moved its screening alerts into its own UI and began searching for a more capable automated solution. Specifically, they needed an AI compliance solution that could handle nuanced edge cases, ensure every decision is audit-ready, and expand analyst capacity as alert volumes grew.

After testing a few platforms, Morse landed on Sphinx. Their AI agents weighed multiple layers of evidence, delivering the precision and judgment that Morse’s compliance standards demanded.

“Sphinx was the most intelligent of all the solutions we tested. We threw complicated, nuanced scenarios at its AI agents, and we were impressed by the results.”

Solution

AI Compliance Agents That Handle Alert Reviews at Scale

Sphinx integrated directly into Morse’s screening setup, providing a reliable foundation for automated alert disposition with minimal engineering lift.

Once this connection was in place, Olga worked with Sphinx to codify Morse’s compliance procedures into the agent’s decision logic. As she highlights, “Sphinx went through multiple iterations to ensure our agent could handle complex alerts in line with our compliance standards.”

With tailored configurations in place, Sphinx now resolves sanctions, PEP, and adverse media alerts in line with Morse’s compliance logic, delivering both regulatory confidence and operational efficiency.

Consistent, Audit-Ready Alert Resolution

For Olga, Sphinx makes it easier to consistently apply Morse’s compliance standards across a growing volume of alerts.

Built to work like real employees, Sphinx agents log into Morse’s system, pull up flagged cases, gather evidence, and evaluate risks to reach a resolution. If the details don’t support a clear decision, the agents conduct external research before escalating the alert to the FinCrime team. With this workflow, the team can focus on complex cases without the cognitive load of repetitive reviews.

Because every Sphinx decision is supported by a structured audit trail and agent logs, the full decision record and rationale are readily available for review by regulators and auditors.

Increased Growth Capacity

On the business side, Gwera leans on Sphinx to help Morse support a growing customer base without adding routine review pressure to the FinCrime team.

Sphinx’s agents work around the clock, so they quickly clear straightforward cases. This shift translates into hundreds of hours saved every month, which the team reinvests into judgment-heavy reviews and scaling Morse’s compliance program.

As logs accumulate over time, the FinCrime team follows the patterns they reveal to further fine-tune the agent’s logic. This feedback loop helps the team expand the range of alerts it can handle independently and free up even more capacity.

But what set Sphinx apart wasn’t just the technology; it was the team behind it. “Sphinx is extremely receptive to our high standards of execution and feedback,” Gwera shares. That ongoing responsiveness keeps Sphinx closely aligned with Morse’s evolving needs, enabling them to boost analyst capacity as the company grows.

“Sphinx resolves sanctions alerts with nearly perfect accuracy. It empowers our team to quickly clear alerts so our customers don’t get stuck waiting days for approval.”
